A South African business delegation will visit New Delhi for BRICS business meetings on September 10 and 11, seeking investment partnerships and a shift towards higher-value bilateral trade.
The South African BRICS Business Council plans discussions on advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, digital services, agro-processing, renewable energy, green hydrogen, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
India accounted for 20.8 per cent of South Africa’s trade with BRICS+ partners in 2025, but South Africa recorded an estimated USD 3.18-billion deficit. Its exports were concentrated in coal, manganese and chemical wood pulp, while imports included petroleum, vehicles, pharmaceuticals and machinery.
The delegation will promote South Africa as an automotive and African-market production base while seeking Indian capital, processing technology and participation in regional value chains under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The agenda is aspirational. Progress should be measured through concluded transactions, diversified exports, local value addition, technology transfer, financing, regulatory access and jobs rather than meeting announcements alone.
