Vice President C P Radhakrishnan has laid the foundation stone for a Rs 110-crore infrastructure-development programme at Gauhati University.
The project includes an academic building, boys’ hostel, modern mess, international-students’ hostel, renovation of the Krishna Kanta Handique Library seminar hall, upgrades to the Birinchi Barua auditorium and residential quarters for Grade-D staff.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and Vice Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta attended the ceremony.
The Vice President also released two university publications: ‘Dr Bhupen Hazarika: 100 Years of a Wandering Song’ and the fifth edition of ‘Chandrakanta Abhidan’.
The investment can improve academic and residential capacity, but delivery should be tracked against tender transparency, construction milestones, accessibility, maintenance funding, hostel allocation and the actual use of upgraded teaching and research space.
