Nagpur Police have prohibited high-powered or modified sound systems and beam and laser lights from September 4 until 11.59 pm on November 1 during a crowded festival period.
The order was issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Police cited disputes associated with high-decibel equipment, statutory noise limits, possible eye injury from lasers and risks to motorists.
The restriction covers organisers, office-bearers, operators and owners of sound-system vehicles and lighting equipment across events including Ganesh processions, Dussehra and Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Day.
The city BJP has asked police to replace the blanket restriction with strict decibel enforcement, arguing that sound-system businesses support many livelihoods and that rules should apply uniformly to all public events.
The policy must balance expression, tradition and livelihoods with health and public safety. Clear equipment definitions, equal enforcement, calibrated penalties, decibel monitoring, appeal procedures and advance communication will be important to avoid arbitrary implementation.
