Around 76,000 people in 187 villages across Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Jajpur remained affected by flooding even as Odisha’s major rivers receded below danger levels.
The state’s second flood spell since August 13 has affected more than 13.5 lakh people in 1,895 villages. At the height of the emergency, approximately 4.94 lakh people were accommodated in 989 shelters across ten districts.
The Special Relief Commissioner’s office said access to marooned villages and the supply of cooked food and safe drinking water remained immediate priorities. Northern and coastal districts had been affected by both recent flood rounds.
The India Meteorological Department forecast heavy rainfall through September 2 and indicated that a low-pressure area could form over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 29. Fisherfolk were advised to avoid the sea off the West Bengal and north Odisha coasts from August 30 to September 1.
Although river levels have fallen, renewed rainfall could slow drainage, damage temporary repairs and prolong displacement. District administrations should keep shelters, food stocks, drinking-water testing, medical surveillance and evacuation transport ready until the forecast risk period has passed.
