The Telangana government has announced plans to develop a dedicated ride-hailing application for auto-rickshaw drivers as an alternative platform comparable to commercial aggregators such as Uber and Ola.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the state information-technology department would develop the platform, although details on its operating model, commission structure, ownership and launch schedule have not yet been released.
Auto-rickshaw unions withdrew a proposed indefinite strike after the government gave assurances on several demands.
The state agreed to increase auto fares for the first time since 2012 and said it would consider permitting passenger bike taxis only when they carry commercial yellow registration plates.
Drivers in Hyderabad would be eligible for financial assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh to retrofit diesel and petrol auto-rickshaws with electric-vehicle technology.
The minister also said he would consult Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and other ministers on the Congress party’s promise of annual financial assistance of Rs 12,000 for auto drivers.
A public ride-hailing platform could reduce aggregator commissions and improve driver bargaining power, but viability will require a strong passenger base, reliable mapping and payments, safety systems, grievance handling, transparent fare rules and sustained technical operations. The government will also need to clarify whether it will operate the service directly or through a professional independent entity.
