District authorities in Kakinada intervened to resolve a dispute between students from northeastern states and local Andhra Pradesh students at a private nursing college after disagreement over a missing mobile phone escalated inside the hoste
The phone, which belonged to a student from the Northeast, was subsequently recovered, but allegations and counter-allegations between the groups led to a tense standoff.
District Collector M. N. Harendhira Prasad and Superintendent of Police Bindu Madhav sent officials to the college to calm the students and stabilise the situation.
As a precaution, students from northeastern states, including Manipur and Nagaland, were shifted to a nearby hostel and provided food and accommodation.
The district administration said the students were safe and rejected social-media claims that certificates had been taken, fees remained unpaid or students had been expelled.
The college management was warned to improve hostel facilities and create a more inclusive environment. Police said student concerns were being addressed to prevent further conflict.
Students from the Northeast thanked the administration for its intervention and the separate temporary accommodation.
Although the immediate dispute was contained, the episode illustrates how a minor property disagreement can acquire regional and identity dimensions when trust is weak. Follow-up should include a documented grievance process, anti-discrimination safeguards, hostel supervision, dialogue between student groups and monitoring of misinformation that could inflame tensions.
