The West Bengal government has begun reviewing fare revision, compressed-natural-gas availability, electric-vehicle charging and driver grievances affecting app-based cab services in Kolkata.
Transport Minister Arjun Singh directed officials to ensure adequate CNG supply and consider alternative suppliers if required.
Operators also raised compensation for vehicles requisitioned for law-and-order duties and alleged that private or non-commercial vehicles were being offered for hire through aggregator platforms.
Owners of such vehicles will receive seven days to withdraw voluntarily, after which enforcement action is expected. The state is also examining the industry’s long-pending demand for revised fares.
Kolkata has around 21,000 active app cabs. A durable policy response will require transparent fare methodology, fuel-price adjustment, aggregator accountability, driver grievance systems, legal vehicle classification, insurance compliance and adequate charging and CNG infrastructure.
