The Haryana Human Rights Commission has ordered free and uninterrupted government-tanker supply to residents of a Faridabad housing society while authorities examine allegations that nearly 500 families have lacked public drinking water for more than 20 years.
Residents of Achievers Society in Sector 49 said borewells and private tankers had served as temporary sources since the development was established in 2004-05, but the borewells subsequently dried up.
The Commission observed that adequate drinking water is central to survival, health, sanitation and dignity and referred to constitutional and statutory duties concerning water supply.
The Municipal Corporation commissioner and Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority chief executive have been asked to report on the presence of a public network, reasons for non-provision and the condition of existing water sources before the next hearing on November 12.
The interim tanker order addresses immediate need but is not a durable substitute for piped supply. The inquiry should establish development approvals, infrastructure obligations, water quality, tanker monitoring, financing and a time-bound permanent solution.
