Tamil Nadu is considering Foreshore Estate in Chennai for a new integrated Assembly and Secretariat complex estimated to cost around Rs 1,200 crore.
The proposal envisages a 15-storey main building with approximately 20 lakh square feet of built-up area on about 25.16 acres, potentially extending to 26.5 acres with additional Revenue Department land.
The Tamil Nadu Housing Board has permitted the Public Department to use around 21.37 acres in Mylapore. Most of the 1,380 government quarters previously on the site were demolished after becoming dilapidated, and action has begun on the remaining 96 units. The Greater Chennai Corporation has made another 0.93 acre available.
Foreshore Estate emerged as the preferred option over sites at Guindy and Nandambakkam, but formal in-principle sanction, the final design and construction schedule had not been announced.
A project of this scale requires transparent site comparison, coastal and environmental review, mobility planning, heritage and community assessment, detailed costing, legislative scrutiny and a clear explanation of how consolidating offices will improve public administration.
