UltraTech Cement has signed service agreements with Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and other manufacturers to deploy more than 600 heavy-duty electric trucks by December 2026.
The vehicles are expected to move around five million tonnes of clinker and other materials each year across Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha.
UltraTech began using compressed-natural-gas trucks in 2021 and electric trucks in 2024. It says its lower-emission logistics fleet now exceeds 850 vehicles. Other suppliers involved in the latest deployment include IPLTech, Energy in Motion and Sany.
The company estimates that the additional electric fleet could displace 39 million litres of diesel and avoid more than 117,000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions annually.
These are company projections. Real-world reductions will depend on vehicle utilisation, electricity sources, route design, charging availability, payload, battery performance and life-cycle emissions. The programme nevertheless represents a significant operating test for heavy electric freight in Indian industrial logistics.
