Ladakh Director General of Police Anand Jain has inaugurated new and upgraded facilities at the district jail in Leh to improve inmates’ living conditions.
The completed works include a new dining hall and store, along with upgrades to the prison kitchen and barracks.
Jain directed prison authorities to integrate correctional and reformative measures into day-to-day management and called for regular vocational-training programmes.
The proposed training is intended to provide inmates with employable skills and improve their prospects of earning a livelihood after release.
Ladakh Police described rehabilitation and humane correctional infrastructure as institutional priorities.
Physical improvements can support dignity, sanitation and safety, but a rehabilitative prison system also requires healthcare, mental-health services, legal aid, education, family contact, trained staff and post-release support.
The long-term value of the initiative should be assessed through occupancy conditions, participation in training, certification, post-release employment and recidivism rather than construction completion alone.
