Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has laid the foundation stone for five brownfield expansion projects of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited and Yantra India Limited in West Bengal, with an estimated combined value of nearly Rs 3,500 crore.
The projects comprise three facilities for GRSE and two for Yantra India and are intended to strengthen defence-production capacity in the state.
GRSE is expanding its shipbuilding infrastructure at its Garden Reach headquarters on the Hooghly and at additional riverside locations.
The warship builder has entered into lease agreements with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, for two small shipyards on opposite banks of the Hooghly and a 32-acre riverside property at Raichak.
The additional sites are expected to increase GRSE’s capacity for warship construction and refit work while creating opportunities for suppliers, ancillary industries and micro, small and medium enterprises.
Singh said the projects could contribute to industrial renewal in West Bengal through new investment and employment. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attended the ceremony.
The expansion reflects continuing investment in India’s defence-industrial base and shipyard capacity. Its strategic value will depend on timely construction, integration of the leased sites, order visibility, skilled workforce availability and the ability of local suppliers to meet naval quality and delivery standards.
