The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans for an Olympic City and a separate Motor Sports City in Chennai as part of an effort to expand elite-sports training and international event infrastructure.
The proposed Olympic City would be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority with international-standard arenas, a high-performance training centre and dedicated sports-science and sports-medicine facilities.
Plans also include accommodation for athletes and coaches and specialised equipment intended to support preparation for the Olympic Games and other international competitions.
The Motor Sports City is envisaged with infrastructure capable of hosting Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 events, alongside facilities to identify and train racing talent. A national task force is separately examining the development of motorsport and a possible Formula 1 return to India.
The announcement did not specify sites, budgets, financing, delivery schedules or operating models. Viability will depend on land and environmental approvals, governing-body certification, event demand, transport access, recurring maintenance costs and whether facilities support year-round athlete and community use rather than occasional events alone.
