Search and rescue operations continued for a second day at Satya Niketan after the collapse of a decades-old multi-storey building killed six people and injured several others.
The building housed a boys’ paying-guest accommodation near Delhi University’s South Campus and collapsed at around 1.30 pm on Sunday while repair work was under way. Eleven people had been pulled from the debris at the time of reporting.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reviewed the site with government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials and visited injured people at AIIMS. The government has ordered a magisterial inquiry and directed that a police case be registered against the building owner.
Delhi Police, the Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority continued operations through the night.
The inquiry must determine the building’s structural condition, approval and occupancy status, the nature of the repair work, responsibility for safety controls and whether prior warning signs were ignored. Criminal liability should be decided through evidence and due process rather than preliminary statements.
