Tiruchirappalli International Airport has begun domestic air-cargo operations, creating a new logistics channel for businesses across central Tamil Nadu.
The service started on August 25 after approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The airport handled approximately 2.46 tonnes on its first day, including a 1.19-tonne consignment carried to Hyderabad on an IndiGo passenger flight.
Cargo will initially use available belly capacity on passenger services. Tiruchirappalli has domestic connections to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad, providing onward access to wider markets.
Potential users include textile, engineering, machinery, component, agricultural and food-processing businesses requiring faster transport for time-sensitive consignments.
The airport previously focused largely on international cargo. Sustainable domestic growth will depend on regular airline capacity, competitive tariffs, screening and handling efficiency, cold-chain and storage facilities, shipper demand and reliable road connections to the regional industrial catchment.
