The United Kingdom and the Andhra Pradesh government have signed a government-to-government partnership to support Amaravati’s development and strengthen urban infrastructure across the state’s 123 municipalities and municipal corporations.
The memorandum focuses on infrastructure planning, sustainable urban development, technology transfer and innovation, and integrated urban mobility. It is intended to bring UK expertise into project planning, financial feasibility, execution and programme management.
The state plans to explore Building Information Modelling, digital twins and intelligent transport systems for project design, monitoring and delivery. Training and knowledge-sharing between UK institutions and state agencies are also envisaged.
Mobility cooperation could cover integration of public transport, metro networks, bus corridors and airport links, pedestrian infrastructure, data-driven traffic management and last-mile connectivity.
The arrangement extends beyond Amaravati to urban works valued at around Rs 40,000 crore across 123 local bodies, including roads, stormwater drainage, drinking-water supply and waste management. UK-based Foster + Partners had previously designed major administrative buildings proposed for Amaravati.
The partnership provides a framework rather than a delivery guarantee. Its value will depend on defined projects, procurement arrangements, financing, data governance, local technical capacity, climate resilience and measurable improvement in construction quality and municipal services.
