Hundreds of Pune residents have staged a protest demanding a ban on high-decibel DJ systems during the Ganesh festival, which is scheduled to begin on September 14.
Protesters gathered near Goodluck Cafe Chowk and said intense sound during processions was affecting health, disturbing neighbourhoods and prompting some residents to leave the city during immersion days.
Participants said their objection concerned excessive noise across festivals and public events and was not directed against a religion or community.
Representatives of Ganesh mandals alleged selective targeting and argued that other environmental concerns, including pollution of the Mutha River, receive less public attention.
One mandal representative said organisers had decided against using certain high-intensity audio devices and would follow administrative guidelines.
The dispute requires enforcement based on measurable sound levels, permitted hours and location-specific restrictions rather than selective or identity-based action. Advance permits, calibrated monitoring, public complaint channels, penalties for repeat violations and protection for hospitals, schools and residential zones could reduce confrontation while allowing lawful celebrations.
