Federal Express Corporation plans to invest approximately USD 150 million in an integrated air-cargo hub at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The proposed facility will cover about 230,000 square feet at GMR Cargo City and is intended to strengthen connectivity across northern and eastern India while linking businesses with international markets.
FedEx said the hub would increase processing capacity from around 600 to 5,000 packages per hour, with provision for further expansion.
The investment is worth more than Rs 1,400 crore at the prevailing exchange rate. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in New Delhi in the presence of Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu.
GMR Cargo City will be developed in phases, and construction is expected to begin shortly. The available announcement did not specify the commissioning date, employment projections or the precise division of investment between buildings, automation and operating systems.
The project could strengthen Delhi’s position as an express-logistics gateway, improve time-sensitive trade and support sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce and high-value manufacturing.
Operational benefits will depend on customs processing, landside connectivity, night operations, cargo-terminal coordination, security, digital integration and the ability to avoid bottlenecks as throughput rises. The investment should also be assessed against India’s wider objective of becoming a major regional air-cargo hub.
