Karnataka food-safety officials have issued notices to five canteens and kitchens operating in medical-college hostels after inspections identified expired food items and labelling deficiencies.
Authorities inspected 34 kitchens and canteens in government and private medical colleges on August 27. At one facility, officials reported labelling violations and seized seven kilograms of expired semolina and eight litres of stored milk.
The health department said a case was being registered against the concerned food-business operator under applicable provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and Rules. The operator is expected to appear before the Additional District Magistrate acting as adjudicating officer.
The inspections identify immediate non-compliance but should also lead to systematic correction. Medical-college hostels require documented procurement, expiry control, cold-chain records, pest management, kitchen hygiene, staff training, periodic testing and publicly traceable closure of inspection findings.
