The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the Jhansi Link Expressway at an estimated cost of Rs 7,968.30 crore to improve connectivity with the Bundelkhand Industrial Development Authority area, the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor and other locations around Jhansi.
The state government will bear the entire anticipated construction expenditure, with no financial contribution proposed from the Union government.
The project is intended to provide faster and safer access from other parts of Uttar Pradesh and the country to emerging industrial and defence-manufacturing locations in Bundelkhand.
The government said construction action would begin at the earliest and that the expressway would be completed in a time-bound manner.
Improved road access is expected to support investment, industrial activity, business movement and direct and indirect employment.
The project’s economic impact will depend on its final alignment, connection with existing expressways and freight routes, land acquisition, access-controlled design and the pace at which industrial sites in the BIDA and Defence Corridor areas become operational.
Because the state is assuming the full financial burden, disclosure of the detailed project report, financing plan, cost per kilometre, traffic projections, tolling model, environmental clearances and construction milestones will be important for assessing value for money and fiscal exposure.
