Democratic Youth Federation of India activists entered the compound of the Divisional Railway Manager’s office in Palakkad during a protest against the proposed bifurcation of the railway division and transfer of stations, including Mangaluru, to the Mysuru division.
Police and Railway Protection Force personnel initially stopped the march at the gates, but some protesters scaled the compound wall and reached the main entrance. Others later broke through the blockade and joined a sit-in outside the office.
Additional police and railway security personnel were deployed to prevent entry into the building. The available report did not indicate serious injuries or arrests.
The Railway Board’s proposal has triggered wider political opposition in Kerala. The Youth Congress announced a separate march, while Congress members of Parliament planned a hunger strike outside the divisional office on Onam.
Opponents claim that transferring stations would reduce the Palakkad division’s revenue, a significant portion of which is linked to freight movement through Mangaluru port.
Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in Kerala have defended the proposed reorganisation and argued that it would not affect railway development in the state.
The dispute combines administrative efficiency, freight-revenue allocation, regional identity and political mobilisation. A transparent decision would require publication of the operational rationale, station-wise revenue and traffic data, staffing implications, investment commitments and expected service outcomes under the proposed structure.
