Five contract workers were injured in an explosion at an NTPC thermal power plant in Odisha’s Angul district shortly after midnight on August 22, police said.
Three of the injured workers were admitted to the NTPC hospital, while two were transferred to Bhubaneswar for advanced medical care.
Police described the incident as a mild explosion. The three workers remaining at the NTPC hospital were reported to be in stable condition.
The exact cause of the blast had not been established at the time of reporting. Authorities are expected to examine the equipment involved, operating conditions and compliance with plant-safety procedures.
The incident highlights the continuing occupational-safety risks faced by contract workers in power-generation facilities. A reliable assessment will require the findings of the technical and statutory investigations, including whether any equipment failure, maintenance gap or procedural lapse contributed to the explosion.
