Cybersecurity company Atalanta has launched an artificial intelligence-assisted platform named Argo, designed to identify vulnerabilities in complex software and internet-connected systems supporting critical infrastructure.
The technology incorporated into Argo was earlier used to strengthen the security of Viasat’s satellite communications network after a major Russian cyberattack in February 2022. The attack, carried out on the day Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, disabled thousands of satellite modems across Ukraine and several European countries.
The incident demonstrated how a coordinated cyber operation could disrupt communications at the beginning of a military campaign. It also highlighted the strategic vulnerability of civilian and commercial digital infrastructure during geopolitical conflicts.
Atalanta describes its approach as ‘software understanding’, combining mathematical verification methods with artificial intelligence to examine software behaviour and identify weaknesses more comprehensively than conventional testing systems.
The launch comes amid increasing concern over state-linked cyber threats to communications, energy, water and other essential services. Government agencies in the United States have recently warned that Iranian hackers are targeting water and wastewater systems as well as other critical infrastructure.
Atalanta Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Anjana Rajan said existing cybersecurity tools and techniques were not capable of addressing the scale and complexity of modern software systems. She said software-understanding technologies could become increasingly important for organisations developing systems of national significance.
Viasat Chief of Cyber Strategy Nick Saunders said the technology had helped the company assess and strengthen the resilience of its network against future cyberattacks. The platform also produces mathematical evidence to support security and resilience assessments.
Atalanta’s technology is being used in the United States Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, which includes work associated with the development of autonomous nuclear reactors. The application of such technology to nuclear systems reflects the growing requirement for independently verifiable software security in high-consequence environments.
Greg Shannon, Chief Cybersecurity Scientist at the Idaho National Laboratory, said similar capabilities could eventually become part of standard software-development and testing systems. He indicated that such tools may become widely adopted over the next one or two decades.
The United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has invested more than $2 billion over several decades in formal methods and related technologies. Formal methods use mathematical techniques to verify whether software and hardware systems operate according to specified requirements.
The Pentagon has also indicated an interest in making mathematically supported cybersecurity assessments a standard for defence systems.
The commercial introduction of Argo reflects a broader shift from vulnerability detection based primarily on known attack patterns towards deeper analysis of how software systems actually function. Its effectiveness will depend on whether it can be deployed at scale across older, highly interconnected and operationally sensitive infrastructure.
As cyber operations become increasingly integrated with conventional warfare, technologies capable of identifying hidden vulnerabilities before they are exploited are likely to assume greater strategic importance.
